Preventive Maintenance/Periodontal Care

During your regularly scheduled visits, we will carefully examine your teeth and gums to check for any sign of decay or infection.  We will take any necessary x-rays, and Dr. Bilow will do a screening for oral cancer.

We’ll also ask you to give us a complete health history, so that we can evaluate your risk factors.  (Did you know, for example, that people who have diabetes are more likely to have periodontal disease?)

Periodontal disease is serious

Neglecting your gums can eventually lead to periodontal (gum) disease. Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection that is triggered by preventable factors--plaque build-up, tobacco use, certain medications and stress—and by factors that can’t be prevented—systemic disease and fluctuating hormone levels during puberty, pregnancy or menopause.

Periodontal disease begins when bacteria plaque (the sticky film that forms on a tooth’s surface) inflames the gum.  If the inflammation isn’t treated, the plaque releases toxins breaking down the natural fibers that hold your gums to your teeth.  That allows even more bacteria and toxins to invade. Plaque deposits harden into calculus or tartar, which can’t be removed by brushing.

Over time, periodontal disease can lead to severe inflammation of the gums, bone loss, gum recession and tooth loss.

Unfortunately, you many not even realize that you periodontal disease since its symptoms are often unnoticeable in the early stages.  Once the disease has progressed, you may see signs like these:

    * Red, swollen, tender or bleeding gums
    * Gum recession, or gums pulling away from teeth
    * Loose or separating teeth
    * Pus between the gum and tooth
    * Persistent bad breath
    * Bite changes
    * Change in the fit of partial dentures

Please call us promptly if you notice any of these symptoms.  Periodontal disease can be controlled, and if it is treated promptly you will you have noticed any of the above signs or symptoms, please make an appointment promptly! Together, we can win the battle against periodontal disease and maintain your wonderful, dazzling smile: gums and all. Now that’s something to smile about.
